Senior Systems Engineer – Complex Communication Systems

Job description

Senior Systems Engineer – Complex Communication Systems

📍 Northampton (predominantly on-site, hybrid available) | Permanent

We’re working with a specialist UK engineering business designing and delivering complex communication and sensing systems used in demanding operational environments. The company operates as a small, highly capable engineering team, delivering both new product development and bespoke customer solutions.

They are looking to hire a Senior Systems Engineer to play a key role across the full system lifecycle — from early concept and bid support through architecture, verification and delivery.

The Role

You’ll act as a technical integrator and system owner, working closely with RF, hardware, embedded software and mechanical engineers to define and deliver end-to-end solutions.

Responsibilities include:
  • Systems engineering across the full lifecycle (requirements → architecture → verification)
  • Supporting bids, tenders and early technical solution definition
  • System architecture and interface definition
  • System performance analysis and verification
  • Leading design reviews and managing technical trade-offs
  • Producing system documentation, specifications and test artefacts
  • Acting as a technical focal point across multiple engineering disciplines
This is a hands-on senior role, combining technical depth with ownership and delivery responsibility rather than line management.

Background Sought:
  • 5+ years’ experience in a systems engineering or product engineering role
  • Strong grasp of systems engineering methods and lifecycle thinking
  • Experience working on complex, multi-disciplinary engineered systems
  • Comfortable operating independently and guiding other engineers
  • Able to deliver under pressure in resource-constrained environments
Useful Experience (not all required)
  • Exposure to communications, RF-enabled, sensing or data-link systems
  • Awareness of digital or analogue electronics and/or embedded software
  • Experience contributing to concept of operations or early system definition
  • Background in bespoke engineering, defence, security, or mission-critical products
Practicalities
  • Predominantly on-site role due to system integration work (hybrid supported)
  • Minimal travel
  • UK right to work required and ability to obtain security clearance
Why Consider It? If you’re a systems engineer who enjoys ownership, technical breadth, and real delivery responsibility — rather than being a small cog in a large corporate machine — this role offers genuine impact in a focused engineering environment.
