The Role: Senior Lab Technician – Electronics/Mechanical

The Company: Computing Systems Innovator

The Location: Cambridge

Job Type: Permanent

What does the company do?

A spin-out of the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, this company combines novel materials with traditional semiconductor photonics to achieve high performance at the single-photon level. The first application of these proprietary components will be an end-to-end free-space quantum cyber security system which will enable the secure exchange of cryptographic keys globally via satellite and metropolitan links.

Sounds interesting! What would the Senior Lab Technician do?

There are three main responsibilities for the role. Providing hands on technical support for the team of physicists in the state-of-the-art lab is the main task at hand. Also supporting the electronic engineering team to build mechanical and electronic/optical products. Supporting the sourcing of components and building, testing and reworking them to enable the wider team to deliver on projects is also essential. You would also work to improve and maintain the facilities in the lab to make sure everyone works in a safe environment.

I’ve done that before! So what skills do I need to have to get the job?

-          Extensive experience supporting engineering/physics teams in a lab environment.

-          Electronics, mechanical and optical component experience working with suppliers.

-          Electronics test experience, PCB reworking, soldering etc. Construction of prototype product hardware including reading of mechanical drawings.

-          Experience having worked with fibre coupled devices would be beneficial.

Are there any benefits on top of the salary?

25 days annual leave + bank holidays. Free health & wellbeing support. Membership to their onsite gym. Cycle to work scheme. Corporate membership with the Cambridge Botanical Gardens. Pension scheme. Flexible working from home options for non-lab related work. Onsite parking. Casual dress policy. Fruit and drink for free in the office and also dedicated time for professional development.
