FPGA Engineer – Contract (Outside IR35)
Cambridge – Onsite/Hybrid
Join a specialist team designing next-generation hardware and software for secure communications and defence technologies. This is an opportunity to contribute your expertise on a contract basis, helping turn pioneering concepts into real-world prototypes.
You’ll be working at the forefront of national defence and security innovation, collaborating with leading scientists and engineers to deliver high-impact solutions. From idea to implementation, your work will play a direct role in tackling technological and cyber threats while solving complex technical challenges.
This role is suited to an independent contractor who thrives in flat-structured, collaborative environments. You’ll have the freedom to innovate, drive technical direction, and take ownership of projects across a range of cutting-edge technology initiatives.

Requirements
- 3+ years’ FPGA firmware development experience (VHDL/Verilog, Vivado/Quartus).
- Proven track record of designing and delivering FPGA solutions from concept to prototype.
- Relevant degree in engineering, computer science, or related discipline.
- Desirable experience:
- DSP/system modelling (MATLAB/Simulink).
- Embedded software (C/C++/Linux).
- Electronics development, SDRs, radar, or communications applications.
- Agile, creative, and comfortable working end-to-end on technical challenges.
- Previous defence sector experience advantageous but not essential.
