Firmware Engineer

Job description

🚀 Firmware Engineer | Shaping the Future of Imaging 🚀
                                                                       Location: Cambridge, UK | Full-time

My client is a trailblazing space-tech company on a mission to redefine Earth Observation. Our innovative approach combines cutting-edge technology with a deep focus on real-world impact to help tackle some of the planet’s most pressing challenges.

Now, they are looking for a Firmware Engineer to join their dynamic core technical team. If you love building high-performance systems from the ground up, this could be your next adventure.

You’ll play a key role in the development of embedded firmware for low-level microcontrollers used in infrared telescopes. Working side by side with hardware and systems engineers, you’ll bring products closer to launch-readiness and support critical testing phases across the board.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Designing and developing application-level firmware for microcontrollers.
  • Creating intuitive CLI interfaces for microcontroller interactions.
  • Writing scripts to automate firmware evaluation and drive test rigs.
  • Supporting environmental test campaigns through development of rig software.
  • Collaborating on design reviews and firmware subsystem planning.
  • Assisting with hardware integration alongside a multidisciplinary team.
🔧 What You Bring
  • ~3–4 years of industry experience developing firmware in C.
  • Solid experience working with UART, I2C, SPI and other embedded protocols.
  • Proficient in Python for scripting and CLI tools.
  • Experience interfacing with third-party systems via firmware.
  • Comfortable using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab tools.
  • Familiar with IDEs, version control (e.g. Git), and project management tools like Jira.
  • Strong communicator and team player, able to contribute across disciplines.
🌟 Bonus Points
  • Experience with Linux-based systems.
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases.
  • Excitement about working in a fast-paced startup environment.
📈 Why Join?
As a rapidly growing company based in the heart of Cambridge, my client offers real opportunities for growth, innovation, and hands-on impact. You’ll gain early exposure to systems and work on challenges few engineers get to face.

If you feel you are suitable for this role, please don’t hesitate to apply now. For more information, or to discuss your experience/CV, please do get in touch with Jeremy van Waveren at SoCode Norwich.

And if you don’t have an uptodate CV, don’t worry.
