Lead Electronics Engineer

Job description

Lead Electronics Engineer | Medical Devices
South Cambridgeshire | On site (flexible working options)

Are you motivated by building technology that genuinely improves patient outcomes?

We’re partnering with a Cambridge consultancy on the lookout for a Lead Electronics Engineer to take ownership of electronic hardware development across a diverse portfolio of projects within the medical device sector.

This is a senior, hands-on technical position with leadership responsibility. You’ll lead electronic hardware design on a range of medical and healthcare projects, while also playing a visible role in client engagement and proposal work. The environment is fast-paced and varied so you might be defining architecture on one programme, reviewing detailed layouts on another, and supporting a client-facing technical discussion the next. It suits someone who enjoys switching context and can balance technical depth with commercial awareness.

What You’ll Be Doing:
You’ll lead electronic hardware design from early concept through to verification, taking ownership of technical delivery across multiple programmes. Alongside hands-on development, you’ll provide high-level technical input to projects and proposals, acting as a senior authority within the business. The role involves building strong, long-term relationships with clients and collaborators, contributing to business development through networking and proposal support, and mentoring junior engineers to strengthen overall team capability. You’ll also play a part in improving internal tools, processes and technical standards, while supporting system-level design activities, verification planning and structured trade-off analysis where needed. Depending on your experience and interests, there’s scope to operate as a technical lead, reviewer or broader consultant across a range of projects.

What They’re Looking For:
  • Postgraduate degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering or similar
  • Around 10+ years’ experience in hands-on hardware design and implementation
  • A rounded view to product development
  • Confident when client-facing with a commercial approach
  • Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals and system-level thinking
  • Experience contributing to or improving tools, methods and processes
  • Evidence of delivered, real-world product development
The Person
You’ll be technically strong and comfortable taking ownership. You know your tools, you’re detail-focused, and you’re confident engaging with clients at a senior level. You enjoy mentoring others and take pride in raising the bar for the team around you.

Just as importantly, you understand regulated environments and the discipline required to deliver compliant, high-quality products. Knowledge of medical device standards (e.g. IEC 60601, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 62304) is desirable, but not essential.

If you’d like to discuss the opportunity in confidence, get in touch.
